Suncorp Super Netball star and Australian Diamonds squad member Sharni Layton will suit up for The Hawks next week as part of both clubs’ preseason preparations.
Layton will take to the court with The Hawks’ Championship division team this Wednesday, April 4, in the first round of preseason games as part of the build-up to the Victorian Netball League season.
The former Diamonds captain, who played for The Hawks (then known as Melbourne Central) when she was rising through the ranks of State League netball, is currently preparing for the Magpies’ Suncorp Super Netball season and is aligned to The Hawks franchise along with teammate Shae Brown.
Brown last year played numerous games with the club as she chased valuable court time and match fitness throughout the SSN season.
Hawks coach Jacqui Hansen said the opportunity to have a player of Layton’s calibre on the court at VNL level was a thrill for the club and a huge tick for the Victorian Netball League.
“The fact that a player like Sharni wants to come back to VNL to enhance her Super Netball preparation speaks volumes about the strength of the underpinning competitions in Victoria,” Hansen said.
“Our girls will take so much away from just having her alongside them with her intensity and professionalism, even if it’s just for one night, and we can’t wait to have her out there with us.”
Layton will be in action at Wednesday, April 4, at 9.40pm on Court 3 and 10.20pm on Court 5, at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Parkville.
